If you know me, you’ve certainly heard me going on about my first nephew, Noah.
Noah was born on July 28th to my sister-in-law Susan and her husband Justin. As soon as we got the “ok” to visit, my husband and I drove to the hospital with my mother-in-law to meet the newest addition to our family. Of course we were all in love with him instantly! After spending some time just taking it all in, I instinctively went to my camera, because that’s what I do in almost all important moments. I took quite a few pictures that day, but this one shown above was my favorite.
Two weeks later, my husband and I went to visit Noah at his home. I brought my photo equipment and set up for some baby portraits in their living room. One thing I always look for in studio equipment is portability, since I do a lot of on-location setups, so it was quick and easy to do. Noah let me take pictures of him for about 20 minutes, and then told us all in his own way that he was totally finished with pictures and ready to move on to something more fun. I do a lot of portraits but mostly of older children and adults, and this was my first real opportunity to make portraits of an infant. It’s definitely a lot different than other types of photography, but it was so much fun and I hope to be doing a lot more of it in the future.
The fun thing about being the aunt, and not just the photographer, is that I get to be there for a lot of unplanned cute moments. The photographs below were from a family gathering on Labor Day. They are candid, not posed, but I think these are the very moments that standard portrait poses are based from.
