Glenn & Kellie – A Wintery Engagement

Wednesday, December 15th, 2010

I don’t get too many couples willing to brave sub-freezing temperatures for an engagement session, but Glenn and Kellie were determined to make some great portraits despite the weather. So we got some warm drinks, put on our coats and hats, and went out in the snow to play. It was a cold but beautiful day. I had my camera to keep me warm, and Glenn and Kellie had each other!  This might be the most fun I’ve had in the snow in a long time.

We spent part of our session inside the Columbia Club on the circle.  I loved this shot by the fireplace, it felt so good to be warm!

“Engagement” Portraits with Alexandria & Daniel

Downtown Indianapolis Engagement Portrait Photograph with Lensbaby

If you read this blog often, this couple might look familiar.  I had the privilege of photographing Alexandria and Daniel’s wedding last year!  Last year I met this happy couple only four weeks before their wedding, and their fast approaching wedding date made it difficult to find time for an engagement session.  Since they’re already married, these aren’t technically “engagement portraits”, but the love shining through the photographs in the same a year later.

Alexandria and Daniel told me they love spending time at Old Point Tavern, so we went there to take some photographs.  Of course, while we were there, we had to stop by the perpetually dancing lady on the corner!

The downtown Starbucks is another favorite hang out for these two, so we captured some images in the park right next to it.

After it got dark, we explored some alleys and then made our way back to The Rathskeller.  This historical Indianapolis restaurant hasn’t changed much in the last year since their wedding!

Contests & Web Sites

Friday, October 22nd, 2010

Wondering if you’re in the right place?  You are!  I’ve been hard at work creating this brand new web site and blog.  Aside from the new look, the new design features wide pages so I can show you bigger images.  You will also notice some new images in most of the categories, and a couple of personal messages from me to you explaining my philosophy of wedding photography and portrait photography.  I am still working out a few visual quirks in a few browsers, but overall I hope you’ll enjoy it.  Please let me know what you think!

I would really like to thank Amanda Cullen of Zoo in a Jungle Marketing for her design of our beautiful new logo!  Reflected Spectrum is a lot more than a business to me, and when I needed a new logo I knew that if anyone was able to meet my unrealistically high expectations it would be Amanda.  She listened to all my ideas and asked some great questions, and in the end she created something totally different and better than any of my doodles.

In other news, last night this image won first prize in the October contest of the Photo Venture Camera Club!  I actually created this image at one of the Photo Venture field trips to a dress rehearsal of the Gregory Hancock Dance Theatre.

Image of Squirrel In Autumn By Indianapolis Fine Art Photography By Reflected Spectrum

Last week, fall officially began! It has always been one of my favorite seasons; in so many years it has marked the beginning of new adventures with new books and new pencils, wedding bells and birthdays. This year autumn marks the beginning of some exciting new changes for Reflected Spectrum. I am finally able to reduce my other time commitments so I will be able to devote more of my time to the pursuit of awesome photography and to making this business as perfect as possible for my wonderful clients! This means you can expect shorter turnaround times on proofs and print orders. You can also look forward to more frequent blog posts, more fine art images, and a brand new web site full of great new features to be phased in over the next few months. I will also be able to schedule consultations and portrait sessions during week days in addition to weekends and evenings.

Over the next few weeks I will be making some major changes to the format of this web site and blog. I will try my best to keep the disruptions to a minimum, but please pardon our dust and feel free to speak up if you have any trouble.  And thank you, to all my clients, friends, and mentors for being a part of this amazing journey!

Tajuana + Jerome: Love in the Library

Thursday, July 15th, 2010

Tajuana and Jerome had planned on an outdoor engagement portrait session, but the weather had other plans for us that day.  Rather than reschedule, we decided to try something new and move our portraits indoors to the Central Library!  This was my first time having a session in a library, and I was surprised how fun it was and how many great pictures we were able to create there.  After I got home and looked at the beautiful images from the day, I found myself hoping for more rainy days.  Tajuana and Jerome make an awesome couple, and I can’t wait to be their wedding photographer in October!

Portrait Fun With Alyssa

Saturday, July 10th, 2010

Meet Alyssa.  She is two years old and 100% amazing.  She and her mother met me at Holiday Park to take some fun and creative portraits.  I had lots of great ideas for artistic portrait poses to try, but this little girl only had one thing on her mind: play!  Well, I didn’t get into children’s portrait photography to force kids into uncomfortable poses and bribe them to make fake smiles for the camera, so I suggested we take a play break and visit the playground.  We ended up having a blast together, she played, I chased her around with my camera, and her mom watched us and enjoyed!  The fun candid portraits we made together on the playground ended up being some of our favorites from the day.

What I love most about creating candid portraits of children is being able to capture their natural expressions.  I love the picture above because it shows so much joy, fun, and mischief.  Isn’t that what being a toddler is all about?

Alyssa loved the playground telescope.  This shot might be worth something one day if she grows up to work for NASA!

A lot of people say I must’ve gotten lucky when I capture a shot like this.  The truth is it isn’t luck, I planned for it, positioned myself, and waited for it.  It often takes several tries to capture a great action shot, but perserverance pays off!
